Which Size Suitcase Should I Buy?

The first thing to consider is whether you require a carry-on or checked suitcase for your travels. A carry-on case is the smaller option that won’t need to be checked in and can be taken with you on the plane. It is best to check with your airline regarding their maximum allowance for carry-on luggage measurements. However, generally the maximum linear measurement allowed for a carry-on case is 118cm (according to Air NZ guidelines). A checked case is essential for big trips, able to hold a bulk of your belongings. You can either choose from a medium checked case (between 65-69cm) or a large checked case (around 75cm and above). A medium checked case is sufficient for a week away, whilst a large checked case is better for a couple weeks away. Once again, you’ll need to check with your airline on their restrictions. However, if you are flying with Air NZ , you’ll want a suitcase with a linear measurement that is 158cm or less to avoid paying an oversized baggage charge. If you are looking to optimise space within your suitcase, pack smarter with a set of packing cubes.

If you have kids coming on holiday with you, we have a range of kids luggage which is the perfect size for their carry-on. Check out Trunki for cute ride-along suitcases that your child will love scooting around on! Your little girl will love the Una the Unicorn or the Flora the Fairy Suitcase. If you have a little boy, they are sure to be a fan of the Tipu Tiger Suitcase or the Percy the Police Car Suticase. If your child is a Disney fan, Marvel or Warner Brothers fan, we have also got you sorted. Featuring bright cartoon graphics of Toy Story, Frozen, Batman, Spiderman and more.

Should I Buy Hardside or Softside?

Hardside is the most popular style in terms of aesthetics, often coming in a wider range of designs and styles. Hardside luggage is also the way to go if you are carrying valuable belongings that you don’t want crushed. The hardshell is also easier to clean up, as it can be wiped down with a damp cloth. If you get caught in the rain, your belongings are also less likely to get damaged, as water should just roll off the outside. Some great affordable hardside luggage options include the Samsonite Engenero, the Explorer Luna-Air 2 and the Nomad Expedition. If you have a slightly higher budget, check out the Samsonite Oc2Lite, the Samsonite Cosmolite or the Saben Going Places. If you are concerned about durability, make sure to check the material. The most durable material on the market is called CURV material, which is a Samsonite exclusive. Runner up to that is polycarbonate and polypropylene, with the biggest difference being that polypropylene is a little more flexible.

Softside luggage is a lot easier to stuff extra’s into, as it is much more flexible. A lot of softside cases come with an expander, allowing you to fit more things in on the way back home. It is also easier to squish into overhead bins or luggage racks. Additionally, these cases often have a greater amount of external pockets for organisation. Lastly, a softside case may be able to withstand a little bit more rough handling from baggage handlers, as it won’t crack like hardside cases can. In general, softside cases tend to be a little lighter based on the material it is made from, so if you are worried about going over the weight limit, softside suitcases are great. For an affordable option, have a look at the Explorer Astrolite, the NZ Luggage Co So-Lite 3.0 or the Samsonite B’Lite 4.

In both cases, you’ll want to make sure you are paying attention to a few key features. One of the biggest things to look out for is the weight of the case. A lightweight case is super important so you don’t go over the weight limit at the airport. This is especially necessary if you have a tendency to overpack. The lightest suitcase we stock is the Samsonite Cosmolite, manufactured using their exclusive CURV material. This material is not only lightweight, but also highly break and crack-resistant. If you are concerned about stability and easy rolling, opt for a suitcase with 8 wheels. Double spinning wheels tend to be easier to roll around, especially if you are rolling across uneven surfaces. If you are worried about packing space, choose a case with a zip around expander to safeguard yourself.
